John Quincy Adams Middle School Dress Policy for 2012 - 2013

(* Indicates changes for 2012-13)

It is the obligation of the Jefferson Parish School Board to provide an educational atmosphere which shall be conducive to the learning process.  Students, teachers, staff, and administrators have the right to be free from distracting influences which hinder the learning process.

It is the policy of the Jefferson Parish Public School System to have a dress policy which is impartial, nondiscriminatory, and mandatory for its students.  In keeping with this policy, uniforms are mandatory. They may be purchased from area uniform shops. In addition to the school uniform, the Jefferson Parish dress code remains in effect.

The following is the official uniform/dress code for John Quincy Adams Middle School:

*1.  ID's must be worn on a lanyard and be clearly visible on the chest area at all times.

  2.  A student may not write on or deface any part of the school uniform, shoes, bodies, IDs, or book bags (name may be written inside the strap)..  Any decoration or accessory must be in good taste and NOT be offensive, insulting, promote hatred, or incite inappropriate behaviors.

  3.  Hats and/or sunglasses shall not be worn in the building.

  4.  Jewelry is discouraged.  Only pierced earrings may be worn.  Only stud earrings no larger than a dime are allowed.  No hoop or dangling earrings are allowed.  This is a safety issue.

5.  The official school shirt is the gray pique Adams shirt available at area uniform shops.  Students may wear plain white or light gray shirts under their uniform shirts.  Adams club/spirit shirts may be worn on Fridays.  The shirt must be tucked neatly inside pants/skirt.

  6.  Khaki uniform style pants for boys and girls.  Pants cannot be jean, cargo, carpenter, or extremely low hip hugger style and can’t have cell phone pockets.  Pants cannot be rolled up.   Pants must not touch the ground.   No shorts, capris, or cropped pants are allowed.

*7.  Girls may wear khaki uniform style skirts that are no shorter than just below the knee.   Skorts are not allowed.  Skirts must be worn at the waist and not rolled.   No pants of any kind may be worn under skirts.

8.  A plain webbed khaki or gray military style belt with military buckle is the only acceptable belt style.

9.  Plain white or black tennis shoes only.  A quarter-sized white or black logo is permitted.  Laces and shoe soles must be the same color as the shoes.  Shoes must be properly secured.

10. Socks/footies are required and must cover the entire foot.  Tights (not leggings), knee high or crew socks must be solid white, solid black, or solid gray.

11.Winter attire:  Only Adams sweatshirt, wind breaker, or team jacket is allowed.  The gray pique collared shirt is required even if a sweatshirt or other outer wear is worn.  Pullover shirts, sweatshirts, and sweater tops are NOT allowed to be worn over the uniform shirt.  In very cold weather students should layer their clothing—undershirt, Adams uniform shirt, Adams sweatshirt, and Adams gray windbreaker.  When layering clothing, please keep in mind the outer most layer of clothing MUST be a gray pique Adams shirt, an Adams sweatshirt, an Adams windbreaker, or an Adams jacket. A heavy winter coat (no jackets) may be worn to school but must be removed upon entering the building.

12. Pants, skirts, shirts and shoes must be zipped, buttoned and/or fastened at all times.

 13. Only Adams P.E. shorts and shirts are allowed.
